Yokohama: The Founding Spirit

Established in 1917, the Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., opened its Hiranuma Plant in Yokohama in 1920 and began selling Japan’s first corded tire, the Hama Town Cord, a year later, which was three times more durable than the competitions fabric tires.

Yokohama developed balloon tires, tires designed specifically to prevent heat problems, giant tires for trucks, Y-shaped tread tires and tires with colored sidewalls, similar to the United States trend.

In 1935, they entered the OE market by producing tires for Nissan and Toyota.

They opened a tire plant during WWII to keep up with tire production during wartime demand.

After WWII, they built another plant in 1946 in Mishima and in 1950 they opened its Hiratsuka Factory, which remains one of the company’s core manufacturing facilities. Responding to diversifying needs during Japan’s postwar reconstruction, developing not only tires and belts but a wide variety of products and grew into a comprehensive rubber products manufacturer.

In 1984, Yokohama purchased a 10% stake in Hankook Tire in South Korea.

Toyo Tire and Yokohama established a joint venture to sell passenger car tires and truck and bus steel radials in Germany with Marubeni Corp in 1988 and then teamed up with GenCorp to dive into the United States market in 1989.

Yokohama Rubber has a history of pioneering that has kept it at the forefront of its industry throughout its more than 100-year history. Since its foundation, it has continually accepted new challenges, thus ensuring its position as an industry leader.
