General: Anywhere is Possible

General Tire was founded in 1915 in Akron, OH by a former franchisee of Firestone, William O’Neil and 4 other men. He decided to compete with Firestone after they oversold their tire franchise and reduced the territories of its current members. Originally called the Western Tire & Rubber Co.

It bought out a few competitors during the Great Depression and several radio stations in Ohio to advertise.

In the 1930s General Tire enters the OE market for International Trucks and it pioneered the recapping of truck tires with a revolutionary method that not only decreased cost but also sped up production by 50%. Without this innovation, the massive demand for tires in WWII would not have been met.

After WWII, it entered the OE market for passenger car with General Motors.

In 1983, General Tire was placed into a holding company, GenCorp, with its many other companies. GenCorp invested heavily into its military defense operations and decided to sell General Tire to Continental in 1987, during a hostile takeover attempt by Wagner & Brown. Continental has been producing them ever since.

In 1989, GenCorp’s auto division, Toyo Tire & Yokohama jointly created GTY Tires for manufacture of heavy truck tires in the United States
