Sumitumo: The Sumitumo Way
The Sumitumo Rubber Industries traces its origins to 1909, when the Sumitomo Group made an investment in Dunlop Japan, the newly formed Japanese subsidiary of the British company Dunlop Rubber. Dunlap began producing tires in 1913 and was Sumitumo Rubber was founded, shortly after, in 1917.
Sumitumo’s industrial plants had been ravaged by war and after Japan surrendered in WWII, all Sumitumo Group companies were disbanded and Sumitumo Rubber became its own company until the early 1950s, when they began mending old ties. Over the years Sumitomo and Dunlop developed a close business relationship, and in 1963 the Sumitomo Group acquired control of Dunlop Japan and renamed it Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. SRI later acquired Dunlop’s UK assets including Pirelli Tire and Dunlop’s French assets in 1984 before they went bankrupt and acquired Dunlop’s US assets in 1986 totaling $240 million. They renamed Dunlop UK to SP Tyres.
In 1997, Sumitomo formed a joint venture with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, by which Goodyear and Sumitomo agreed to manufacture tires for each other’s markets, including Dunlop branded tires. As part of the agreement, Goodyear acquired 75% interests in SP Tyres, the UK company which Sumitomo had formed, and in Dunlop Tire Corporation. Goodyear and Sumitomo also made investments in each other.
In January 2016, after the dissolution of the partnership with Goodyear, they acquired a factory in Tonawanda, New York which began producing Falken Tires.
